Do Mediums Require Education?
Mediumship is often spoken of as a “gift,” something you’re born with, something instinctive and unteachable. And while natural sensitivity is real, it’s only one part of the path. The truth is, education is not only important for mediums, it is essential. Being able to sense spirit doesn’t automatically mean you understand what you’re receiving, how to interpret it, or how to deliver it responsibly. Like any meaningful calling, mediumship asks more of us than just our instincts. It asks us to study, reflect, and grow.
When you meet a medium who is entirely self-taught, something often feels missing. There’s no depth, no real connection, because you cannot learn this work in isolation. Mediumship is not something you can forge alone. It requires a mentor, a teacher, someone who can take you beyond your own limits. Without that, you stay in a loop of your own mind, never reaching the deeper currents of spirit. Development needs structure, support, and refinement. You don’t know what you don’t know until someone helps you see it. There is also an ethical dimension to this work. People come to mediums in grief, confusion, or searching for something deeper. That makes the responsibility immense. Without education in the history of Spiritualism, the mechanics of energy, ethics, discernment, or even basic human psychology, it is easy to cause harm, even with the best intentions.
Some of the most respected mediums in history were also lifelong students. They didn’t stop learning once they could connect. They read, they sat in development circles, they questioned, and they deepened their understanding of the world both seen and unseen. For them, education wasn’t a detour from spiritual development. It was the path. Education sharpens discernment. It helps you recognise when a message is truly from spirit, or when it’s being shaped by your own mind or emotional bias. It keeps ego in check. And it teaches you how to hold space for others with care, clarity, and compassion.
Even now, I believe we are all still students. No matter how long we’ve walked this path, there is always more to learn. Mediumship is not just a skill. It is a relationship with spirit, and like any relationship, it deepens with time, attention, and humility. So yes, education matters. In fact, I would say it is one of the most sacred parts of this work.

Yes, I believe everyone should be a life long learner, as there is real joy to be had in having an inquiring and curious mind. I very much enjoyed reading your blog, thank you. Do you think it is possible for someone who is not naturally sensitive, to learn how to become more sensitive?
Dear Maggie,
Thank you so much for your kind words—I’m so glad you enjoyed my blog. Thanks for taking the time to engage with it!
I believe we’re all born with a natural sensitivity, but to varying degrees. For some, this sensitivity is deeply felt from an early age, allowing them to tune into emotions, energy, and subtle vibrations around them. Others may not notice it as strongly, or perhaps they only become aware of it later in life when they begin to explore their deeper connection to the world. I do believe that sensitivity can be developed and strengthened over time. Through spiritual practices, patience, and trust, we can deepen this gift, allowing it to become a more integral part of who we are. It’s a process of learning to listen to the subtle cues of energy, emotions, and intuition that guide us daily.
That said, I also believe some people may never fully awaken to their sensitivity, and perhaps that’s not meant for them. Every journey is unique, and not everyone will feel called to explore this part of themselves.
I wish you a wonderful weekend ahead.
Warm wishes,
Jackson
